Indulgence seems to be a common theme for my birthday. And rightfully so, birthdays only come round once a year after all. Last year, I said if your birthday falls on a weekend, you get the whole weekend to celebrate. Well this year my birthday fell on a Sunday so I took full advantage again of my birthday weekend theory.
Friday night there was dancing.
Saturday night there was eating. And dancing.
Sunday there was more eating. No dancing. Eating again.
Are you seeing a theme here? :)
If you haven’t guessed yet, I love to eat and dance. Preferably at different times. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, let’s talk birthday indulgences.
Saturday night my friends from college and I went to Red Lantern in the South End of Boston. An upscale Asian restaurant, Red Lantern takes you to a whole other world with its decor.
A sophisticated and sexy bar with red lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
The dining room features an open kitchen.
With the exposed brick walls, statues placed around the dining room and more red lanterns hanging from the ceiling. You can now see how walking into this place felt like entering another world.
For dinner, I had the crispy vegetable rolls with homemade chili garlic, soy reduction.
And the Ronin Roll with spicy tuna, cream cheese, avocado, and tataki albacore.
For dessert, we split the creme brulee trio (from left to right): Vietnamese coffee, passion fruit, and hibiscus.
Happy birthday to me!
Overall, Red Lantern was a fun experience. I wasn’t wowed by the food and my friends weren’t very impressed either. I do think you need to go at least once for the overall experience though. I would love to go back and sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen for dinner or go back and have some sake cocktails at the swanky bar.
I was so preoccupied with taking pictures of the decor and food, I forgot to take pictures of the company! Am I the only one who forgets to take pictures with my friends or can other food bloggers out there relate?
Peace, love, and food,
